Gardom’s Edge Rock Art

Rock Art

Gardom’s Edge, Rock Art

Uphill from the Gardom’s Edge ringcairn brings you out onto Gardom’s Edge itself with its commanding views to the west towards Baslow and the Derwent Valley. The edge itself is of specific archeological interest because of the variety of prehistoric features, including a scarp edge enclosure, hut circles, cairns, a menhir and this fabulous example of rock art.

Look out for a tall menhir which can be seen through the trees and located at SK27257323. It is a beautiful example of a standing stone and worth visiting.

Following the line of Meg’s Wall for about 250m and a short distance to its north you should be able to see the large flat stone that features the rock art. To be precise though, what you see is not made of stone at all. Air pollution was deemed to be causing the original stone to erode at an alarming rate, so the decision was made to bury it nearby in order to preserve what was left and replace it with this excellent fibre-glass replica, of which most people can’t tell the difference until they give it a tap!
