Gardom’s Edge Ringcairn

Ringcairn

Gardom’s Edge, Ringcairn

Gardom’s Edge is probably one of the most important and certainly one of the most archaeologically explored areas of The Peak. The edge was the site of extensive settlement in the Bronze Age and has left us with the remains of field systems, ritual monuments and a fine example of rock art.

Gardom’s Edge is an impressive ringcairn located on an atmospheric slope with excellent views in all directions. The diameter is roughly 14m and a quick examination of the bank reveals the rubble that it was constructed from. I first visited it at the height of summer and it was horribly overgrown with bracken, but there were clearly some large stones at the southeast entrance that could either be kerb stones or orthostats. Other than that, only rubble stones making up the embankment were visible underfoot.
