Gibbet Moor Hut Circles

Hut Circles

Gibbet Moor, Hut Circles

Initially I believed these circles to be ringcairns, but in 2001 the Derbyshire Archaeological Journal published a paper indicating that they are more likely to be ‘platform with partial bank house sites’, or hut circles.

At first these three rubble circles may seem somewhat underwhelming, but on further examination they are quite fascinating. The first two rings are approximately 12m in diameter and the third is slightly larger at 14m. Well worth visiting simply because I cannot think of another example of three rings like this in the Peak and I believe they will help your understanding of life here in the Bronze Age.

The three circles are all adjacent to each other in a line running northeast to southwest. The most northerly is the most prominent circle and will probably be the one you spot first.
