Eyam Moor II

Embanked Stone Circle

Eyam Moor II, Embanked Stone Circle

This site was rediscovered in 1983 after the heather was burnt back. The circle is approximately 12m in diameter, with four orthostats remaining upright on the inside edge, ranging from 70cm to 90cm wide and barely 30cm high, although much of their size probably remains below the peat level.

It took some time, but I was able to clear back the bilberry bushes to reveal the four upright stones on the inner edge of the embankment. The inside diameter is approximately 8m, with the bank being roughly 2-3m wide. In the centre there is clearly a robbed cairn. It is amazing that for years this site lay unnoticed next to a fairly busy walking route. Even the people who stopped and spoke to me had no idea it was there despite having walked that route for over 30 years!
