Curbar Edge South

Cairn, Tumulus

Curbar Edge South, Robbed Cairn or Barrow

The sites on Curbar Edge are so close in proximity that a visit to one warrants the seeing of the othes. Therefore I suggest starting from the south and walking north along the edge. Alternatively you could approach from the north, especially of you are visiting Stoke Flat on Froggatt Edge, which is approximately 1.5km north of Curbar Edge North.

There isn’t really much to see at Curbar Edge South, other than a standard robbed cairn. It does though, act as a marker for the finding of Curbar Edge South II, which while it is hard to tell exactly what this site is, but the remnants of a rubble bank in an oval shape on an west-east axis strongly hints at this being a robbed cairn, or tumulus, into which a stone lined chamber was probably later set. This site is of particular interest because of exquisite stone-lined chamber that seems to cut into the southwest sector. Also note the formation of kerbstones around the inner circumference of the main area and what looks like an entrance in the eastern side. Could this be a kerbed cairn?

Important: The names I have given to this and the other Curbar Edge sites are of my invention and not ones I have taken from elsewhere. I have done this, as it seems the most logical way to describe the position of each one in relation to the others. Please be aware though, that confusion may occur if using reference from other sources.
