Bamford Moor South

Embanked Stone Circle

Bamford Moor South, Embanked Stone Circle

A beautiful, 6-post circle with clear rubble bank surrounded by other prehistoric monuments, such as a nearby robbed cairn. This site is fairly easy to access, but sensible footwear and clothing are a must as it is open moorland.

On my visit here I spoke with a gentleman who was in search of a fallen marker post as he had been researching the old packhorse routes that used to criss-cross the moors. The post turned out to be the Old Woman’s Stone. We did eventually find it and I am thankful for taking the time to do so as it was worth it. My only hopes are that at some point this stone will be re-erected to its former glory.

Sound is very deceptive at this location. Stanage Edge spreads out in front of you and even from this distance of 1km or more you can clearly hear the voices of people as they make their way along the top of the edge. Perhaps this had some bearing on why this moor was sacred to the ancient peoples.
