Bar Dike

Earthwork, Ringcairn

Bar Dike, Earthwork & Ringcairn

Travelling south along the Mortimer Road from Ewden Beck is Bar Dike. The massive bank and ditch earthwork that is the dike is clear and monumental and despite its original function and meaning being unknown, it remains an impressive vestige of the prehistoric era.

The ringcairn though, is disappointing as there is little to see. The discerning eye can just make its shape, but that is about it, as both a modern fence and trackway, as well as the dense overgrowth of heather and bilberries have plotted against this site leaving little for the visitor to see.
