Strawberry Lea, Freestanding Stone Circle

The general location of this site is easy enough to get to, but to find the circle, especially in summer, is nigh on impossible. On my first attempt, despite having a GPS unit, I had to give up as the bracken was simply too dense.

On my second attempt, kindly assisted by Geoff Watson, who had previously found it, it was still a struggle, but after an hour’s search we literally bumped into the largest orthostat.

It is quite ruinous and hard to imagine what it might have originally looked like, but nonetheless it is intriguing because of its location on a shelf with the high moors all around, except for a clear view to the southeast horizon. It is unlike any other and is probably best visited in winter.
