Stanton Moor South

Embanked Stone Circle

Stanton Moor South, Embanked Stone Circle

Despite being right next to the path, this rubble-banked circle is well hidden and easily ignored by the untrained eye. Worth noting because of the extent of Bronze Age activity on the moor, but not worthy of special praise because of its ruinous and overgrown state.

There is one large stone inside the bank in the western quadrant, which may or may not have been an upright, or kerbstone, of which there are still several others in place flanking the entrance to the south.

A pit can be seen in the centre where the undergrowth may conceal the remains of a robbed cairn or even a cist. Only burning back the vegetation would reveal this site’s true extent.
