Stanton Moor North

Embanked Stone Circle

Stanton Moor North, Embanked Stone Circle

This ruined circle is very hard to find as trees and vegetation have grown up all over it and it isn’t easily recognized. I struggled in both winter and summer to locate it, so OS map and GPS are essential, otherwise you could be searching in vain!

From what remains it looks like this was probably an impressive embanked circle. There are two large stones flanking the southern entrance, but they may just be remaining kerbstones rather than orthostats. Also a large flat stone can be seen lying just outside the north entrance. Its significance is unknown.

It is a shame that it is in such a ruinous state, but given the quarrying activity in this area, it is a wonder that these sites have survived at all. Even today the peace of this tranquil spot is shattered by the noise of a nearby quarry.
